What it costs to digitize film reels
Film is priced in two ways: by the reel, whatever its length (Legacybox and Kodak Digitizing), or by length (iMemories per 50 ft, Larsen Digital per foot). For one small 3-inch reel, paying by length is cheapest: at least $25.00 at Larsen Digital. For five large 7-inch reels, paying by the reel is: $299.99 at Kodak Digitizing, against at least $665.00 at Larsen Digital. Regular prices, with files and shipping where they're priced.
One reel of each size
| Service | 3" reel | 5" reel | 7" reel | 5 large reels |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| iMemories | $59.98 | $149.95 | $269.91 | $1,229.59 |
| Legacybox | $74.97 | $74.97 | $74.97 | $339.97 |
| Kodak Digitizing | $69.99 | $69.99 | $69.99 | $299.99 |
| Larsen Digital | at least $25.00 | at least $71.00 | at least $137.00 | at least $665.00 |
Regular prices with the cheapest way to get files back and shipping where it's priced; "at least" where part is priced only as "as low as". Larsen Digital's figures are for silent film in standard definition and include its $20 minimum. Walgreens lists film reels "starting at" $29.99 and transfers them to DVD only. Tapes and reels together: the calculator.
Per reel or per foot
A kit service counts a reel as one item, so a 7-inch reel with 400 ft costs the same as a 3-inch reel with 50 ft; Legacybox says so for reels up to 10 inches. Its smallest kit sets a floor, though, so one short reel costs less where you pay by length. The more large reels you have, the further ahead per-reel pricing gets: five come to $299.99 at Kodak Digitizing and at least $665.00 at Larsen Digital.
How much film is on a reel
| Reel | Feet of film |
|---|---|
| 3 inches | 50 |
| 5 inches | 200 |
| 7 inches | 400 |
Both charts give the same lengths. Their running times differ because they assume different frame rates, so they're left out here.
